Notifications in iOS5

I just ran across this review of IOS5 and was struck by this bit:

Notifications: iOS 5 includes the new notification center. It works just as well on the iPad as it does on the iPhone. I have found, however, that it needs some fine-tuning to balance the right amount of information with the least amount of interruption.

With the old system, incoming notifications (push alerts from apps, messages, Twitter, Facebook, etc.) popped up on the screen and required the user to dismiss them before returning to their task. In order words, they were a total and complete annoyance.

With the new system, messages can be set up to arrive in a number of different ways–including not at all. If and when they do arrive, they appear at the top of the screen in a tiny little bar. If you want to access that message right away, swipe it to the left and you’ll be zipped into that app. If you just ignore it, it fades away. You don’t have to do anything to dismiss it, and it doesn’t interrupt what you’re doing. Thank GOD!!!

Interesting.

Interesting indeed. Maybe an occusion to promote idea 28716 ttp://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/28716/ : “Notification are annoying when working with a colleague near you”, with solution “Allow easy temporary disabling of notifications”.

Sounds like iOS 5 is borrowing ideas from Android.;)

what notifies me to check the notification pull down tab?? i have missed multiple texts this way only to realize that when i go in later to send a text i have several there waiting for my reply.

i like the idea behind the notifications. my only problem is, lets say you are sitting at your desk. the phone is on silent. a text notification comes in. you don’t see it. it then disappears (in like half a second). a minute later you just happen to pick up your phone to send a quick email. since the notification is now gone and there is no longer a little number above the text icon, you have no idea there is a text unless you just always check your notification pull down tab. but really – isn’t the entire point of notifications and push to signal to you that there is something waiting for you to review????? now i have notify myself to check my notifications about my various notifications.

am i doing something wrong here????
